Key West one place, two cities. Day and Night
We visited Key West each of the last 2 days. One time we visited in the morning through the afternoon. The second day we visited in the evening. Key West is a remarkably different place during the day and during the night.
Today we returned to Key West and had some Dairy Queen. We then visited West Marine (this store is huge. I think there must be a good boating market here...)
On our first visit we took the e-bikes so we could travel around town and visit lots of things.
We visited the Southern most place in the Continental US.
And also the end of the road. Highway 1 had no choice but to stop here....
Katie went to visit the Hemingway House
While Norm and I visited the pastry shop. Our choice was better....
And yes, I ate some before I took a pic. It was simply too good.
We visited a fort turned into a garden....
And a bigger fort that used to have a moat and an 1100ft walkway to get out to it.... But it's no longer an island...
We visited the beach .. spectacular beaches in Key West...
And Katie visited Truman's little White House while Norm and I chilled in the portico of the building in comfy Adirondack chairs.
During the afternoon we toured the city via bikes visiting a church from the early 1800s...
and took in the sites at the Key West Cemetery.
I'm told one of the tombstones said 'I told you I was sick'. We didn't find it. We did visit a section where US Navy personnel are buried. Many were victims from single accident with a battleship.
Jimmy Buffett's recording studio is here... And a make shift memorial...
There are some cool cars here too. This one from Cuba...
We visited some luxury condos and restaurants by the waterfront.
Like this one ..
Before dinner we took in a Key West sunset. They are as good as it gets...
After sunset we walked the streets and stopped for dinner. I had a fabulous Korean Barbeque burrito ... It was so good I forgot to take a pic. Lots of great live entertainment and night life here. Perhaps like no other...
An hour drive back to the boat launch where we hid our dinghy in the mangroves.... And a nice cruise in the dark back to the boat finished our day. A spectacular day (two actually) here in Key West. It lives up to the hype and is a great place to visit...
Tomorrow we start prepping for our next journey. From here we start heading North. We intend to visit the Bahamas but weather may hold us in the keys longer than we would like. Hopefully we get a good weather window to cross the Gulf Stream into the open Atlantic early next week.
Our visit to Bahamas is a big step out there. We have some reservations on Great Exuma (a place we've never visited) and it will take us many days journey to get there. We are praying for good weather and a good crossing as well as a lack of complications with the Bahamian authorities.
The US has issued some safety warnings about citizens visiting Bahamas. We are pretty sure the worst places of concern are the bigger cities (one of which we want to visit). We happen to have friends there in Nassau and I'm sure they would watch out for us.... But there's also the issue of timing and we've been to Nassau.multiole times before... It's all up in the air based on when we get a good weather day for a crossing....
We probably won't post for a couple of days as they will entail laundry, grocery shopping etc.. Until we move again.
