Georgetown to Southport/Anchorage

Short blog today.   

Left Georgetown in rain.  


Traveled 94 miles in mostly rain or thunderstorms.  

Passed a unique swing bridge.  Hard to see.


Got fuel (yippee, another $1000).  Burned 1/4 tank going faster when we could to get closer to Wilmington!   We are now in North Carolina!

We did get one glimpse of the sun.  At sunset.  It was gorgeous. 

Shorter run tomorrow up the Cape Fear river  to Wilmington NC

Rome NY to Brewerton NY

We left Rome this morning headed West toward Lake Oneida.   The plan was to cross the lake and stay in Brewerton at Winter Harbor Marina where we could get access to a courtesy car and do a Walmart run.    The park in Rome on the waterfront is beautiful.   Including a waterfall where the Mohawk River switches from free flowing to Erie Canal.  It joins and leaves the canal over and over again until it reaches the Hudson River.   Today we hit our first lock (Lock 21 on the Erie) only a few miles from Rome.  Rome is the town where the construction of the Erie canal was started and the idea was hatched.  The Erie was a great boom to commerce in middle New York for a long time because it was a shortcut to ship from the ocean to the great lakes and included New York City in the route (making New York critical for transit again at a time things were migrating away).  Dropping in this lock was going ...

Oswego NY to Trenton ON

We left the US!   And the people's republic of New York!    Today was an early one.  Weather was forecast to pick up early afternoon to 20+ mph wind.   We don't want to be in Lake Ontario when the wind is running the length of the lake.    So 5:30am departure it was.   We could see the sun rise as we left the harbor.  And then we burned the fuel.  Serious fuel.  20mph for four plus hours.    The lake was pretty flat.  It started out with some swells from the west but they subsided the closer we got to the North shore.  Eventually we could see the power plant on the shore near the entrance to The Bay of Quinte.   This zig zaggy bay ran 20+ miles getting narrow then wide over and over.  Most of it we could do at speed... Adventure awaits.

Dan and Katie will be leaving for the Great Loop the first week of October.  We'll be living on the boat from mid-September until at least the end of June 2024.    Our plans are to travel 6000+ miles down the river systems of the midwest, around florida, up the east coast to New York, up the Hudson River, across the Erie and Oswego Canals, Lake Ontario, the Trent Severn Waterway (across the province of Ontario), Georgian Bay, The North Channel, Lake Huron, and then back down Lake Michigan to Grand Haven.   Katie has officially "retired" from NorthPointe Christian Schools.   Dan is taking a semi-leave of absence so that we can take this journey.   We're sure we'll miss our family immensely while we are gone but we do intend to make visits home and take a couple of breaks during our trip to "catch up".   How are we going to accomplish this?    On our newest BOAT, of course.   The Motor Vessel Sea-Ya became our trav...
