Smiths Island to Solomons MD

This morning we got up and walked to church.   The only church on Smith's Island. This island is where the first Methodist Camp Meeting took place and they still have them every summer.

That said, not many people in attendance today.   It's easy to see that mainline denominations are struggling by watching the church here.   They have an itinerant pastor and had 33 in attendance last week.  The average age is probably 65..

There were no teens or college age people.  A few babies or young kids with their mothers but otherwise mostly elderly people.  All hymns.  All via the method the Methodists put in place a couple of hundred years ago.  The sermon was decent, but had some doctrinal errors (yea, I know... But I am what I am).  He swapped Joshua and Jacob, claimed God helps those that help themselves.   I know what he meant.  God does expect us to act and not be passive and expect rewards for complacency but that's very different than helping yourself.   There were five people in the choir.   Still.... Very sincere people who love God.  They just have different conditions....

The people were friendly and welcomed us.

After church we walked back to the marina, pulled our lines and headed out.  Rain started as we did....  And it rained all of the way to Solomons.  We watched Calvary (home church) underway.  It was better.

Waves, rain but not much wind.  Tons of crab pots.   I hate crab pots.

Ended up getting up on plane and burning lots of fuel to get on top of the waves.  I'm thankful every once in a while to have over 700hp to push us when we want it.

Pretty ugly out today.  Not many people out.  Maybe 3-4 civilian craft, a couple of big navy ships and some freighters and dredges.   We are here far too early and it was like 55 today.

We anchored here in Solomons to save some money.   It's cold and rainy so no real good reason to be ashore.  We will go to a marina tomorrow and probably stay here a couple of days. It's supposed to be cold the whole time we are here....

Maybe more pics later.  I'll publish a separate entry here for Solomons if we explore and find picture worthy objects....
