May Day at Cape May .. NJ
Funny it didn't occur to me until I was sitting here at dinner. Happy May day! Maybe some things will finally open up out here in the east coast. It's been sad how much is closed in each town we visit.
First, let me say today was beautiful. Weather about 70 and a good bike ride in the morning to see a light house
and a WWII observation tower
as well as a ship made from cement...
It was a bad idea....
It sunk here after breaking loose in a storm but it wasn't efficient to move much .. It did make five trips across the Atlantic though...
We received our stock of oil from Walmart so we have sufficient supplies to get home (hopefully).
We also visited downtown Cape May. This is the Jersey Shore after all (and exit 0 on the New Jersey turnpike, even though it's not really an exit since it's the end...).
The car ferries run from here over to Delaware on the south end of the bay.
And it's another town with a beautiful church.
And a cute shopping walking district.
Where we could get some frozen custard from a business that's been selling it for almost 100 years.
Oh for the days of four large scoops for a dime ..
Life was simpler then, but they didn't have so many things we take for granted either...
But they had fish and chips.... And it was probably as good if not better than now..
I did fish for dinner, Katie did a grilled chicken BLT. (We went out to Lucky Bones a short walk from the boat).
Of course they also didn't have many of the challenges we have today...
Flies biting and swarming the boat. Fly swatters working overtime. No seeums chewing. When there's no breeze... It's not good.
And the ebike curse has returned. Down again so I had to manually bike back from town. At least I'm getting exercise. I've had it with my e-bike. Repairing it works - for a while - but it's a cheap Chinese knockoff without support and I haven't been able to get any kind of tech support from them. The bike is going to move to the bow and get tied up until we are home once we make it to fresh water. I've ordered a replacement....
We also determined that a bunch of backups I had configured at work years ago no longer are functional because Amazon discontinued the functionality. Yes, the servers have fun for years without attention and cheaply... But we are going to have to rebuild one of the sites from scratch. Joy. I hate wasting man hours. Of course the backups that were supposed to be run by WordPress also weren't configured so no backups for 2024... Ouch. Fortunately not something in one of the major companies I support.... This too will pass.
Then, of course, when problems occur they seem to come in threes. Got news my daughter in law borrowed my son's car (and left hers) this morning and got in an accident on the way to work. Thankfully she is physically ok. The car, however, is dead. Finished. Just what we all needed when I'm not home, the kids are buying a house and finances are stretched by an over budget boat trip.
I will be thankful to be home in a couple of weeks (if only for a week to get some work done and get some spring changeover accomplished)... And I'll be even more glad to be home to Michigan in July (if not sooner). I'd motor for it now if it were possible but the Erie canal doesn't open until May 17, and I'll be in Michigan for a week after that. So.... We try to get through it the end of May and then decide if we go through Canada on the Trent Severn or run Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Huron their full lengths at speed to get home more quickly (and more expensively).
Boat survey was today on my Sea Ray. I haven't heard how it went. Hopefully we hear something soon so I'll know where we stand and if I'm still a multiple yacht owner or if I have some cashflow.... Let's pray for cashflow. I'm ready to stop borrowing more money every month to fill the tank and pay insurance companies....
Til tomorrow when we intend to make a high speed ocean run for New York state! (Or maybe just short in Sandy Hook NJ, as far north as you can get in the Jersey shore..)
Hopefully the water lies down enough because it's 125 miles up the coast on the open ocean.
When life throws you a threepeat of bad news....some hide. Others drink. I eat hot fudge and caramel brownie sundaes... In fact I eat them so fast I can't get a picture before they are half gone.. (I might not have been the only one tearing into this bad boy..)
We didn't move today. At least not on the boat...
